Bezel Eternity Ring ~ Fusing Fine Silver

July 31st

This two-weekend intensive jewelry workshop gives us the opportunity to create a beautiful ring made entirely of bezel set gems.

This classical ring has bezel set stones all the way around the band, giving the designer freedom of choice for shape and color of gems - and depending on the type of stone used, can be very interesting.

Learn the art of creating fine silver bezels, fusing and soldering, ring sizing, and bezel burnishing to set your gemstones. We will discuss the making of the ring in 22 karat Gold.

4 days ~ two weekends.

Intro to Wax Carving I

September 25th

Carving wax is a wonderful alternative to metal smithing for creating jewelry.

Rich textural surfaces and fluid, curving shapes can be created in wax material that can then be cast into a variety of metals to create a finished product.

This class will explore a wide range of sculptural shapes, surface textures, and hollow forms.

Wax carving techniques using both hand tools and the flex shaft will be introduced for carving small objects and jewelry - such as a charm or pendant, as well as ring shapes from different types of wax.

Basic knowledge of the casting process will be covered - during the course students will have the opportunity to have cast at least one piece in metal, and learn how to bring the cast piece to a desired finish.

September 25 - October 30

Saturdays, 11am - 2pm

Classical and Modern Ring Design

September 29th

This Intermediate Level Silversmithing class introduces a number of techniques to build your repertoire.

We focus on ring design - from classical traditional styles to modern, pared down sensibility - looking at how the architecture of the ring has developed.

Technical studies include the use of wire work to create decorative motifs and braiding, piercework and design using the sawframe, and surface texturization using hammers, burs, and stamps.

We also learn reticulation - melting just the surface of our metal to raise the copper to it, creating a buckled, gnarled surface that looks almost like tree bark, which can be highlighted using oxidation / high polish contrast.

Gemstone bezel setting for rings includes choice of cabochon or faceted gemstones, and creating a curved bezel that matches the shape of your design. We provide introduction to gemstone dealers and offer a wonderful behind the scenes tour of the NYC Diamond District, introducing students to many suppliers in the jewelry industry.

Sept 29 - Nov 3

Wed eve's 6 - 9 pm

$400 silver is included.

Space is limited.
