Classical & Modern Ring Design

This Intermediate Level Silversmithing class introduces a number of techniques to build your repertoire.

We focus on ring design - from classical traditional styles to modern, pared down sensibility - looking at how the architecture of the ring has developed.

Technical studies include the use of wire work to create decorative motifs and braiding, pierce work and design using the saw frame, and surface texturization using hammers, burs, and stamps.

We also learn reticulation - melting just the surface of our metal to raise the copper to it, creating a buckled, gnarled surface that looks almost like tree bark, which can be highlighted using oxidation / high polish contrast.

Gemstone bezel setting for rings includes choice of cabochon or faceted gemstones, and creating a curved bezel that matches the shape of your design. We provide introduction to gemstone dealers and offer a wonderful behind the scenes tour of the NYC Diamond District, introducing students to many suppliers in the jewelry industry.
