Hinged Locket with Clasp

Making a Memory ~

Hinged Locket with Clasp

- Intermediate Level (basic silversmithing pre-requisite)

For centuries, lockets have been significant and sentimental wearable objects in the history of jewelry and various cultures.  They have served as reliquaries, containing memorabilia or keepsake and presently may most commonly be known to hold an image of a loved one.

During this fast paced class, students will create a locket with hinges and a clasp or lock. Techniques include scoring and bending metal to create crisp corners for rectangular or squares forms, and how to create hemispheres out of sheet metal for round forms. Demonstrations will also include a clasp or locking mechanism, a simple single knuckle hinge and a more advanced multiple knuckle hinge.

There will be an emphasis on your artistic interpretation of the project, what you choose your locket to hold and how both will affect and inspire design decisions.  Your locket could hold a special found object or memorabilia, or something intangible such as a secret, an experience, idea, emotion or attribute.
