Intermediate Wax Carving

This class is designed to be an intermediate level class for those who already have some beginning wax carving experience. Concentration will be on carving a ring with a bezel set gemstone. More advanced carving and surface decoration techniques will be covered (faux granulation, build up using wax pen, etc), as well as wax scraper usages/sharpening skills. Different ring shank styles will be covered as well as ring hollowing, sizing, and gemstone setting in metal. Depending on individual skill levels, we will also cover prong settings or preparing a wax for burnish or pave setting. Introduction of a Master Touch Welder tool allows for precision and intricate design work.

Karen Bachman has professionally worked with Tiffany & Co. as well other major fine jewelry designers and now produces her own jewelry. With a fine arts degree in sculpture, her work is influenced by Brancusi, Noguchi, and Eva Hesse.

The application of traditional techniques combined with modern, industrial materials has always intrigued her. Karen hand carves bold, sculptural forms in various acrylic resins or wood. The pieces are then enhanced with precious metal leaf, sterling silver inlay, or semi-precious gemstone beads; then finished by either polishing or sand-blasting. Her goal is to create wearable sculpture that is both luminous and elegant.
