Prong Setting Workshop

Learn how to construct your own prong setting for a round gemstone out of metal rod in this 2-day workshop. Learn how to measure and account for depth and shape of the stone. Learn to cut a seat and create a bearing with files & burs, and how to select proper bur size. Build a setting for a 5-20mm round stone of your choice. Also learn how to set faceted stones in traditional, v-shape, and basket settings. Become familiarized with which burs and tools to use. Shape prong tips and make sure stone is secure.

With Instructor Donovan Smith.

After graduating with a degree in metalsmithing from the University of Oregon, Donovan apprenticed under master goldsmith Gary Dawson, from whom he learned how to apply his skills in a real world setting. Shortly after moving to New York City in 2000 Donovan became the man behind the scenes, producing jewelry for esteemed designers like Me & Ro and Philip Crangi.
